About The Artwork

These days, time has stopped to exist for me. I have been constantly working in my solitude. I wake up, look at the sky, my art, my writing and indulge myself by splashing strokes, dots, new images on canvases. Before going to sleep I try to capture fragments of the universe which is very fluid. I feel like a dot amongst millions of other dots. But each time, I breath the whole universe moves. My solitude gives me a magnetic pull to survive as a single woman artist in the harsh world of competitions. I don't copy any style. I paint what creates awe and challenge in me. I write what I like. I have lived and worked in many countries. All images and stories are stored in the files of my mind. The sky full of stars. Women workers making roads under the piercing sun in New Delhi. Fisherwoman from Kerala sweating her labour into the fat belly of a money shark. Lions mating in Serengeti Park. Snow melting on Mount Kilimanjaro. Masai women collecting firewood, tilling the land and building huts while men chase flies. Like beautiful autumn from Denmark. Like Beachy Head from East Sussex (also known as UK's no.1 suicide spot). I can pull these images anytime I want to. Finding inspiration is not a difficult job for me. Images jump upside down, inside out, walk with me like faithful puppies. In my trance, I shut all the other noises to create art and writing. You can call it an artists delusion, a poets world of tripping realities, a writers building block. Dot on dot, brick by brick, I build sand castles of truth bewilderment. For the viewer to perceive, for the collector to buy. For the art lovers to treasure.

Having limited freedom as a teenage girl in India in the 1970s, she found solace in the world of drawing, painting, and poetry. After spending two years at the prestigious Art College of India, disillusioned in love and thirsting for freedom, she left India to travel - a journey which has taken her through adventures and periods of work in the USA, East Africa, Denmark, and the UK, equipping her with a kaleidoscope of experiences and images which have been interwoven into the subject matter of her art. Seema Gill is not only an accomplished painter but also an award-winning poet and her debut novel “Svera Jang” had been nominated for the 2010 East Midlands book of the year.  Her paintings evoke the joys and struggles of life in vivid colour, patterning, fluid interweaving subject matter, and spiritual growth.  Two words sum up her work - versatility, and life. The former is reflected in the range of art forms in which she expresses herself, the diversity of cultural contexts in which she is able to operate, and of the media to which she seems able to turn her hand with ease. The latter appears in her exuberant imagery, bold and yet gently colorful paintings, filled with the intertwining forms of humans, animals, birds, fishes, and insects whose joyous dance draws in the viewers so that they too become a part of the dance.
