About The Artwork

My inspiration for this was the wonderful artist Henri Matisse. The image was from a B&B that we stayed in in country South Australia. HENRI MATISSE grew up in the northern part of France. He started painting in 1889 during recuperation from an illness. His mother encouraged him not to follow the normal rules of art, but to try out new things and to paint his emotions. In 1897, Matisse was introduced to impressionism, and to the work of van Gogh. Cezanne and Seurat. Fauvism In the early 1900s Matisse developed a new style. He began to paint with bright masses of colours that were freely applied. He used the colours to express emotion often using colors that had nothing to do with the natural colours of the subject. In 1905 Matisse, together with fellow artists Maurice de Vlaminck and Andre Derain, exhibited their new style to the world. One critic called them "fauves", which meant "wild beasts". The name stuck and their style of art was called Fauvism. Cutouts In his later years, Matisse began to experiment with cutouts. He would cut out colored paper and make collages. Legacy Matisse is considered one of the founders of Fauvism art. He is also considered one of the leading figures of modern art as his paintings and art influenced many artists throughout the 20th century.

AUSTRALIAN ARTIST I am an Australian artist working in Adelaide, South Australia. I paint mostly in oil, but occasionally use acrylic paints. Landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes, flower paintings and abstract paintings are included in my repertoire of work. INSPIRATION FOR MY ART As an Australian artist, my inspiration comes from whatever is around me at a particular time. As an example, following a recent trip to the mid north of South Australia, I produced a series of landscape paintings, which include the beautiful Eucalyptus trees and flowers from local gardens. HISTORY My original study was textile design and Adelaide's School of Art and Craft. I then worked for 20 years in various forms of art and fashion. But, in 1997 I followed my other passion, natural health. Since arriving back in Adelaide from Sydney in 1999 I have worked full time as a Naturopath. However, in recent years I have devoted much more time to my painting. Moving full circle, as a practicing Australian artist. This includes participating in exhibitions. Also fulfilling my love of learning by continuing to study and improve my art practice, wherever and whenever I can. Over this period I have attended many and varied art courses and workshops in this time including Peter Bok at Bapea Art School, Liana Vargas Cat Leonard, and Krystina at Splashout Studio, Chelsea Lehman, Trena Everuss and Nona Burden at Adelaide Central School, John Lacey, Ruby Chew, Sophie Hann, Gerhard Ritter, and Deborah Trusson. WHERE ELSE TO FIND ME I regularly post to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
