Inspired by street art I decided to combine figurative painting with stencils. I wanted the figure to have a slightly academic drawing look while the stencils were repeated to create a 'wilder' energised surface. This piece organically grew to address how the term 'toxic masculinity' has been bandied about by those who do not fully appreciate the subtle nuanced difference between negative male behaviours and just being male. Negative male behaviour should be called out and hopefully changed, but just using the term to demonise males can do irreparable damaged. There is a silent pandemic of male suicide and we need to be careful labelling people (labelling applies to so many human rights issues). This image acts as a 'bro-call' to understand and support each other whenever we need a little help. It asks us to be kind to each other.

Craig Knight gained his BA (Hons) Fine Art from Hull College of HE and PGCE Fine Art from St Martins, Lancaster. He is a figurative painter with eclectic interests ranging from comics/graphic novels, graffiti to fine art and philosophy (as lowbrow and highbrow as possible). His paintings develop organically as part of a problem-solving process to gain the illusion of control and deal with personal feelings, social relationships, the structure of memories and the construction of identity. Crowded Neo-Pop imagery is employed as metaphor for conceptual confusion, joy created in the dialogue between artist and audience- sharing references, meaning and confusion.
