About The Artwork

This study of the tiny harbor in Frenchboro, Maine relies on color and almost casual suggestions of form to create a work that retains its visual energy. The Fauvist influence is especially evident in the heightened color palette. The composition is dominated by the large pine in the left foreground, rendered in thick slashes of green and violet. Some of the most effective color use must be the water itself, which progresses from lavender to turquoise in a relatively short span. The surface of my works is textured, partly from the way in which I prepare the surface, and partly due to the style of painting, with thick paint applied with energy. This is deliberate, as I want to create works in which the "hand of the artist" is evident. Soft lighting is important when hanging, enhancing the color and energy, and minimizing the surface texture. The sides of the gallery-wrapped canvas are painted brown, and the piece comes ready to hang.

I have been interested in art since childhood. Following art school, I have spent over 30 years as an advertising/graphic design professional. About 6 years ago I was able to begin painting again in earnest. My particular artistic journey began with an abiding interest in Fauvist landscape, especially those of Andre Derain and Maurice de Vlaminck. Bold color, expressive brushwork, and simplified drawing were also the hallmark of my work at that time. As other influences came to bear, including the German expressionists, the Blue Rider group, and individual artists such as Paul Serusier and Grace Hartigan, my work has been moving inexorably toward abstraction.
