About The Artwork
Oil paint on Arches paper with charcoal borders mixed with spray fix and charcoal background. I make the border first, then face the empty space it delineates. If I have some intent as I make the border I attempt to ignore it. I wait until I feel I am ready to act, to behave, and use the tube of oil directly on the paper and only at that moment I may allow some idea to mix with the behaviour. Once the oil is on the paper I cover it with thick transparent paper and use a Stanley knife blade to spread the oil beneath. At this point I have no control other than gesture. The painting takes place. I remove the tracing paper and see what has happened. It’s exciting and interesting for me. There is surprise and mystery in allowing the material a voice.
