About The Artwork

This painting features a couple of mandarin ducks ("Yuan Yang") in the centre, and lotus flowers in the bottom half. It is hand painted using traditional Chinese brush strokes in watercolour and ink. On the top right corner reads "He Xie" (meaning "harmony" in English), which is written in Chinese calligraphy, followed by the year this painting was created in, the artist's signature ("Lao Deng") and seal. It comes mounted on a wall hangable scroll, can also easily be remounted and framed. In the Chinese culture, mandarin ducks are believed to be lifelong couples, unlike other species of ducks. Even their name in mandarin, "Yuan Yang" refers to one male ("Yuan") and one female ("Yang") mandarin ducks. They are often portrayed in pairs, as they are regarded as a symbol of commitment, loyalty, integrity and fidelity. In Feng Shui, the symbol represents love and attraction among couples and are often used in Chinese weddings. This painting was created in the traditional Xieyi ("Free-hand") style and displays rich brushwork and ink techniques.
