About The Artwork

Initially started while out doing an artist residency in Havana a couple of years ago it has been worked on since and now exhibited. The view over to the parliament building ‘el capitalio’ in the distance, significantly in scaffolding as many buildings in Havana are, your eye weaves up through rooftop worlds of very different buildings from semi shanty town to smart colonial hotels. The piece has layers of print, done while in an experimental workshop with Cuban makers, playing guitars and smoking Monte Cristos in between Goaaaalatio’ echoing around the streets and everyone running out to watch the football. Tissue paper, text and newspaper cuttings have also been used in the background. At the time due to the sweltering summer heat on the rooftop, it was only possibly to work on this piece at first light and at the end of the day, this reflects some of the soft warm colours here but also a typical Caribbean pallets. I watched evening meetings, people watering their plants and salsaing, listen to the whistles and conversation of rooftop neighbours and at times chat to nearby inhabitants, they are not shy! The piece is on paper and framed behind glass

Emmie is a mixed media artist whose inspiration comes from journeys, mystical tales and the bizarre sights she has encountered. These may be the crumbling beauty of Cuban buildings, the sensory kaleidoscope of India or the time echoing features of Istanbul. Her work often examines the transitory nature of architecture from its planning and construction to its ruins and its structure revealed. It has been said that a building is ‘a volume of human history, holding within its pages the stories and secrets of generations past and present’. The world the artist creates is one in which buildings both within and without are permeated with the disparate details of the lives of their former inhabitants. Emmie works with a number of galleries and is represented in London and Internationally by Quantum Gallery in the last year she has shown in New York, Miami, Hong Kong and Singapore. She takes on a variety of commissions and teaching opportunities. For more information please visit: www.emmievb.com
