About The Artwork

Oil, paper garment patterns, pencil, embroidery and thread sewn into the canvas. The garment patterns are shaped into the Hebrew letter shin, which signifies the Eternal Flame. Also, one of the meanings of the word shin in Hebrew is shinui, meaning “change.” and there is a secret verse about the burning coal having to do with the Flame that goes: “I am God, I have not changed.” To me, this meaning is relative to God’s Essence - no change has occurred from before Creation to after Creation. In this painting, I was just beginning to take medication for bipolar disorder and I mediated on this letter for a number of reasons. I was very scared that the pills would change my inner essence in trying to get rid of my "brain cooties". This is basically the inspiration I had in creating this painting.

I grew up in Los Angeles and currently live in the Joshua Tree desert. I am an artist with physical and mental disabilities and identify as transqueer or nonbinary. I am also completely self-taught. I have been a drummer and an artist my entire life. I've toured the U.S. and Canada, and performed for large audiences, played groove/R&B/Hip Hop, jazz, rock n' roll, and studied with notable drummers, musicians, and producers. Earlier in life, I worked as a cutter in the garment industry with my family, beginning at age eleven. I wound up without a formal education and am completely self-taught, but have always been very self-determined. Along with making art, I also create handmade Artist's books. They've been widely collected and placed in major museum and university collections around the world. You can see them on my website at esart.com.
