About The Artwork
This piece was created in memory of my father, James Riley Shirley, 1947 – 1998. After his death, I imagined him in a river: “Then he showed me a river of the water of life, clear as crystal...in the middle of its street. On either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.” The actual picture shows just a hint of a man’s face in the water, and many of the other figures are left blank or unfinished. “For now we see in a mirror dimly…”

Her work draws on cultural and literary symbols to illustrate personal history. She works primarily in two dimensions, incorporating collage or sculptural elements into pieces. A love of language can be seen in words of English, German, Hebrew, Japanese Kanji, or Spanish in many pieces. She graduated from the University of Georgia in 2004 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art.
