About The Artwork

After a visit to the Singer Museum in Laren, and some drinks on a terrace afterwards, while walking trough the heather fields on my way to the train station I was struck by this view of flowering heather in combination with the characteristic silhouette of this pine tree in shimmering twilight. This walk, from the train station in Bussum Zuid through the heath fields to Laren is one of my most favorite pastimes when I need fresh air. Fifteen minutes from Amsterdam and I am in absolute nature, (as far as nature can be absolute in a crowded country as the Netherlands), very beautiful. And Laren is very nice rustic village, originally a farmers village, in the end of the19th century discovered by artists who made it to the residence of the 'Larense School'. This was a group of realistic and impressionistic painters, who nowadays are partially very well known and appreciated, and form the core of exhibitions in the Singer Museum. At present its one of the richest places of the Netherlands, but the atmosphere of a farmers and artist village is still very well preserved. After a visit to this museum and before returning to the fields, there are then very nice terraces where in the old times the artists were drinking and contemplating after lone days in the field, but nowadays of course are the hang out for the present population. The painting is shipped in a wooden crate, ready to hang, unframed, but because the sides are also painted, a frame is not really needed. Landschap schilderij, heidelandschap met dennenboom bij Laren, in olieverf. Landschaft Gemälde in Ölfarbe, Heidelandschaft bei Laren, Holland. Peinture Paysage à l'huile à Laren, Hollande.

Born in 1951. Live and work in Amsterdam. After year's of painting in deforming styles, in 1998 I returned to realism. From 2000 till 2016 I only painted portraits. In every painting I start with a dramatic background, to end up with minimizing all effects, to let the maximum of attention go to the subject.Sometimes a pity because of loss of scenic and painterly effects, but always the optimum for me. In contrast to the life authenticity and vivacity of the subject, the calmness of windless lake. My main example's are Holbein the younger and Michelangelo Caravaggio. Since some years ago I felt the need to do something else. During long hiking trips I made lots of photos of the landscape's I was passing, so the subject of this something different was already rather predetermined. As I have a strong preference for realism, also in my landscapes this preference is not far off. Though, as is said often nowadays, all options are on the table, as in fact I just started with this subject and would like to let my style or style's develop unhindered. Painting portraits stays as fascinating as it always has been, but more playful work in between is a pleasant enrichment.
