Henrietta Lacks was an African-American woman whose cancer cells are the source of the HeLa cell line, the first immortalized human cell line and one of the most important cell lines in medical research. Henrietta Lacks was from Baltimore, like the artist of this portrait. His wife does cancer research at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. The painting has my “e” symbol on the front and my signature on the back. The painting continues around the sides, so it is ready to hang unframed.
