A southern California native, DL “Darrell” Corn has recently found his way back to his home after many years in his beloved Pacific Northwest. His art has emerged as an expression for his creative nature. At an early age Darrell Corn's artistic expression was evident in his constant need to sketch anything. Whether it was landscapes, architecture, animals, or old sailing ships: it just seemed to be something to which Darrell was always drawn. His hobby eventually found success by winning awards in art shows. Darrell found further outlet for his creativity through remodeling several homes and adding extensive craftsman style woodwork; all hand-made by him, which he says felt like a more tactile and solid style of art. He then spent several years creating a large Japanese garden for his home in Seattle. The artist states "The Japanese garden felt like one big canvas with lots of texture. I'm a big fan of texture." Eventually Darrell made his way back to creating art on canvas where he wanted to capture some of the elements found outdoors, such as the grainy organic surfaces in rocks and soil, interesting worn and cracked sidewalks; anything that was weathered or rusted seemed to catch his attention. Darrell builds rich texture using "mixed media" such as paper, paste, gels, found objects, metal, and yes, even rocks and organic material from the garden. "I bring these objects together to evoke within the viewer an emotional response of warmth and possibly nostalgia. An old barn, aging fence, or stucco wall. Things that give me happy feelings.” “I love the use of layers in my art. Layers of color and texture seem to give a depth and interest to my art that catches and holds the viewers attention."
