About The Artwork

One of my “Anachronistic Etudes,” this painting pays tribute to Katsushika Hokusai, the famous ukiyo-e painter of Japan’s Edo period, and to several of his famous art works. Hokusai is perhaps best known for his elegant scenics showing Mount Fuji within seasonal landscapes, but he was also a well-known shunga printmaker. The central figure of the octopus mounting a woman is based on Hokusai’s graphic rendition of the erotic “Dream of the Pearl Diver.” The three small figures dancing in the lower right corner are based on his manga sketches of forest spirits.
