About The Artwork

Inspiration: In 2014 I visited the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney (MCA) and saw the work Sunrise #3 by Australian artist Robert Owen. Sunrise #3 is a vibrant wall painting, designed specifically for the MCA. Sunrise #3 is part of Robert Owen's 'Origami Series' which he began in 1990 and has ranged across painting on canvas, on walls and projections. The Series documents variations of colour and light and, in so doing. explores visual and spatial perception. Robert Owen's work draws on mathematics, geometry and scientific studies of perception. His practice borrows from the de Stijl group and the doctrine of neoplasticism that Piet Mondrian developed around the time of the First World War. This work is no match for Robert Owen's Sunrise #3 in terms of its size but it serves to point the viewer to see for themselves the genius of his creations. 'Homage to Robert Owen No. 1' is a triptych and hopefully will brighten the spirits of anyone who views it. I started to use acrylic spray paint in 2012-13. The apparent simplicity of the such paintings belies the attention to detail and perseverance needed to create them.

I am a colourist. My work explores colour balance, colour contrast and colour relationships. The results are strong vibrant works through to works that are minimalist, subtle and subdued. There are recurring themes of starkness, aloneness, isolation and otherness that reflect my lived experience. While much of my work involves acrylic on canvas and board, I embrace collage and digital painting, mixed media, watercolour and sculpture. I seek to engage with viewers, inviting exploration of the creative process, patterns and markings. Sometime the engagement entails humour. I would like viewers of my work to understand mediums and their meanings. In my mixed media work, I have begun to use found materials, repurposing the mundane and ordinary (for example cardboard) into works that exhibit beauty. My website is: www.trevorroweart.com
