About The Artwork

have referred to Edie's aura and image often when creating art. She fascinates me. She was raised in Santa Barbara California the 7th of 8 children. She grew up in a rich and high status family. She was named after her father's aunt Edith Mi turn Stokes, who was famously painted with her husband, Isaac Stokes by artist John Singer Sargent. Despite her family's wealth and high social status, Sedgwick's early life was troubled She had an abusive father who she recalls sexually abused her several times and 2 of her brothers eventually committed suicide. She struggled with eating disorders her whole life. In walks Andy Warhol and Edie Sedgwick, becomes a 1960s icon, starring in Warhol's movies, and seen with him everywhere he went . Sedgwick became known as "The Girl of the Year" in 1965 after starring in several of Warhol's short films in the 1960s. She was dubbed an "It Girl", while Vogue magazine also named her a "Youthquaker. Her and Andy Warhol become estranged and she starts living in the Chelsea Hotel and becomes close with Bob Dylan. She ended up dating one of Dylan's friends but her drug abuse and erratic behavior lead to their relationships collabs. When I was young I watched the movie Factory Girl and it instantly became one of my favourite movies. I highly recommend it.

Montina (b.1989)is a metis artist who graduated with a BFA in Drawing and Painting from OCAD University. She currently resides in Toronto painting nostalgic imagery fuzed with contemporary expressionism. Montina is in the studio daily, often collaborating with her toddler, creating original and commissioned work. Each painting evolves as a wrestling match between loose, gestural paint and the restraint needed to pull it together into an emotionally charged subject. The varied themes blend and melt into each other within a highly saturated colour palette. Montina's paintings explore subjects and emotions translated from ancestral healing, mediations, dreams, and repressed memories. Mirroring the human condition, each piece is full of overlapping marks of information. Her practice works with the subconscious layers that make up the self and her painting is the vehicle for capturing these energies and directing them into a healing experience.
