ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Walking the longest pedestrian street system in the world, I came upon on this old wall in Copenhagen last July. I was at once enchanted. I looked closely and the peeling, fading, and cracking revealed the many faces and many hands that had touched it over time. And, as if staged for my camera, there was the white bicycle parked just in front, on the brick walkway with the persistent moss pulsing through. Just one. Not the typical heap of bicycles in this sprawling city; just this one, white bicycle against the whitewashed wall with so much to tell. I was intrigued at how it displayed Scandinavian city life and how lovely it was especially considering the randomness of it all. That’s what fascinated me. The colors and the composition were a result not of an artist’s intent, but of time, weather, conditions and many hands and souls. The expressions of culture, the channel of communication and the content layered over time somehow at that moment to me, seemed just right. Telling. Poetic. Beautiful.

Like many artists, this is not my first career; it is my first love and I have been painting all my life. I enjoyed growing up with a teaching art studio in the home where my mother taught painting. After completing my degree, and in addition to the wide variety of art and design classes I completed, I embarked on a self- directed course of study. I sought out working artists with International reputations, who had teaching studios devoted to my various interests. Combining my passion for interior design with my love of painting I have worked primarily with the Washington, DC Interior Design community on private commissions. This type of career has created a body of work that is unusually varied, as many projects are site specific, created for their own unique purpose. These pieces reflect my aesthetic response to place and can be as varied as abstract, trompe l’oeil, stylized realism, expressionism, and murals. My gallery installations are primarily acrylic and mixed media thematic studies of color, form, texture or subject. I have a studio in Northern Virginia and I am a member of the Touchstone Gallery in Washington, DC. My work has been widely published in national and regional magazines, newspapers and industry publications. I've been on HGTV on two different shows and have twice guest lectured at the Corcoran College of Art and Design. I have been voted THREE times, the Designer’s Choice for art studios as published in Home & Design magazine.
