About The Artwork

'Humanize the Code' gave the title to a series of paintings that was presented at Big Screen Plaza in New York in the summer of 2022. See details in this post on my website: https://atelierkapnos.com/2022/07/20/humanize-the-code-presentation-in-new-york/ This painting suggests: It is time to reconsider our progress and see us, humans, as part of a whole-one. As image it is intense through the use of color, and open to multiple readings. The code, symbol of digital sciences, is presented here as the tag < > that can be interpreted as emptiness or as a beginning. The story in the painting shows two figures in conversation, on the left and on the right side of the canvas. The figure on the right explains the basic concepts of human life to the figure on the left. In the top middle we see the head of a third figure looking backwards; that is history, from which we learn if we pay attention. The painting does not give a specific looking point to the viewer. We do not know whether we look at the scene from far or from close-by. The space is open and there are dimensions to look for. The canvas is made of (Belgian) linen fabric of excellent quality; at the edges the linen is left raw in its beautiful natural color. This painting has on it about three months of intensive work. It went through several stages and layers. The first layer was done with acrylic and then I worked on it with oil paint. Upon purchase I will send to the new owner a series of seven photographs of the stages that the painting went through. This painting has a religious feel without being attached to any religion; it is a contemplation on life, space and time.

S. Kapnissi is a dedicated painter, focused on the truth that painting can reveal and thus give a life purpose to people; just like the sunshine does and the warmth of a real home. "My paintings depict the intensity of life; bright colors or black and white, abstract or figurative, my images point at Life and at our humanity that we evoke through beauty." S. Kapnissi (Athens, 1966) studied painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Aristotle University in Greece and at the Free Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague, the Netherlands; for a period as a NUFFIC grantee. She is founding member of the Gaidaro group which from 1999-2008 presented projects advocating for wide participation in the art practice and presentation. Painting is her main activity which often expands to engraving, textile, video and text. Website: atelierkapnos.com
