About The Artwork

The composition of this painting was inspired by an emergency appeal which was on TV about how a mother rhino can protect her baby against poachers armed with guns and chainsaws. Ninety nine percent of media coverage refers to human affairs, so there is very little reference to the problems humans cause in the animal world. If the news world inform us more about the negative impact of human action on biodiversity, people would be more aware of these issues and might be more willing to fight for change. The painting is literal and is based on the ambiguous relationship we have with animals. It is an insight into the uncomfortable truth that life on Earth is facing. The trophy hunters that kill for fun, operate within the law with permits sold by countries seeking revenue. Most of them are businesspeople of the so called 'developed world' and could be my or your employer. The most harmful aspect regarding habitat loss is poaching. The rhino in the painting is a Northern White Rhino with her baby and only two females are alive in Kenya, therefore almost extinct. This is due to the fact that there is a high demand for rhino horns from some Asian countries, mainly China and Vietnam. The horns are used in Chinese medicine -scientifically unjustified- or used as a symbol of status to display wealth and success. This unlawful trade is organised by 'honourable' cartel leaders who provide tracking devices and guns to poachers who kill animals they don't value. A member of a poachers party can get 800 dollars and the cartels can sell a single rhino horn on the back market for up to a quarter of million dollars.
