About The Artwork

The first of the Immigration Series works. This began as an investigation of how clothing can identify and create "others" out of us. In 1998, as we waited in one of the many airports on our way to settle in The United States, we packed our best outfits. Regardless of our attempts, our best clothes were still somewhat uncanny, just like our existence. The title, "I Don't Have A Favorite", comes from being asked who my favorite parent was as a child, and my subsequent answer, to spare my mother's feelings. The body language difference between Pt. I and Pt. II speaks volumes of how I felt. When you purchase any painting from this series, I will individualize your work before mailing the finished product to you. The art will be printed on 140lbs cold press watercolor paper, physically touched on with acrylic, gouache, watercolor, or other medium to highlight the space and/or subjects. This allows the series to continue living through its engagement with identity.

I am a traditional and digital artist focused on a single, ongoing body of work called The Immigration Series. This series re-creates my family photos as we journey from refugee camp to repatriation back to Vietnam, and finally, as we settle in the United States. During the process of remaking these photos, I investigate the tension between childhood memory and mythos, immigration and identity, and how diaspora leaves its imprints on future generations.
