About The Artwork

I created the Sanctuary series based on a rectangular border of many small, segmented oil paintings. The individual paintings fit together to form a sort of courtyard shape with a blank area in the center. I am someone who loves silence and stillness, and the empty center offers rest from the noise and movement around it. I think of each painting like a window -- a small glimpse of something bigger past the frame. All the small windows fit together to create a bigger window-like shape. The individual oil paintings are each painted by hand and feature colors and shapes vaguely suggestive of landscape, sky, or earth imagery. I manipulate the oil paint without brushes, pushing it across the surface and scraping it away so that it is both thick and thin. I also leave gaps between the oil paint shapes where white gesso shows through as a white linear element -- a type of barrier between the shapes of the paintings. But a barrier created by absence, rather than presence. I'm fascinated by containers, compartments, gaps, and boundaries, and by how parts fit together to create a whole. This painting compares thinking to the process of digesting. When we say, "I need to digest that," what is happening in our minds? How does the movement and breakdown and assimilation of information compare to that same process in the intestines? In my painting, the central flow remains similar in color and shape, while the environment around it changes dramatically. This painting is created on heavy-duty gallery-wrapped canvas. The borders are all light sky blue gesso, while the center rectangle is white gesso.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

I create compartmentalized oil paintings on surfaces such as discarded wood scraps, prepared paper, or canvas. The paintings are what I call "mental landscapes" -- both evoking nature and an internal abstract world. I think of each compartment as a window -- a small glimpse of something bigger beyond the visible. The rows of painted segments represent time lapses, and may function sequentially like an abstract comic book. The segments often wrap around the surface, terminate unexpectedly and disappear. My studio is located on the dynamic Space Coast of Florida. I'm currently Professor of Art at Eastern Florida State College, where I teach Drawing, Painting, and Design.
