About The Artwork

↓ ↓ ↓ ▲ PAINTING: Wood, “Kovcheg” (cut-back centre portion), “Levkas” (Gesso), “Pavoloka” ( fabric/piece of cloth), Egg Tempera, Gold Leaf/Gilding HANDMADE ICON The Icons look like a real medieval Russian art, written by old masters of the 16th - 17th – centuries. All my paintings are stylized as antiqued and made in the classic technique of old Masters. ▲ Note: The icons have a number of specific features: cracks (“craquelures”); imitation of loss of the “levkas” and the paint layer. A pattern of minute surface cracks (a network of fine cracks) on painted surface. I developed my own unique technique and technology imitation of craquelure, loss of the “levkas” (gesso) and the paint layer. The crack patterns are artificial (handmade). The craquelure varnish was not used for the stylization! The icons are made to appear aged through the use of artificial methods and various techniques. The majority of the Icons, I have created were painted on aged wood, however, at times I have had to resort to the use of boards created and carved with my own hands, and subsequently aged artificially. In particular, this icon board created and carved with my own hands, and subsequently aged artificially. The “kovcheg” (cut-back centre portion) is deep, with two thin connected cut in the reverse side. All Icons are executed in accordance with the canon, iconographic traditions and iconography technique. The traditional iconography basically imitate rare extant icons of the 16th - 17th – centuries. The icons look old-time (old style/16th - 17th – centuries style) and very similar to the original icons of the 16th - 17th – centuries style. The saint is depicted wearing round fur hat, dalmatic and cloak decorated with an ornament, holding the eight-pointed martyrdom cross in his right hand and a sword in the left. In the upper right corner of the icon, in a segment of heaven, is the half-length figure of the blessing Savior with a Gospel Book in his right hand. On side borders are the figures of the Saints standing (interceding Saints) in frontal poses. On the left, top-down, are the figures of the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious, Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker and the Venerable Sergius of Radonezh. On the right, top-down, are the figures of the Saint Martyr John the Warrior, Apostle Andrew the First-Called and Saint Grand Prince the Pious Alexander Nevsky. On the lower border, in medallion is the half-figures of Our Lady of Vladimir, Guardian Angel and Our Lady of Kazan. THE HALOS AND SOME ELEMENTS OF CLOTHES ARE PAINTED IN GOLD (Gold leaf). Saint Prince-Martyr Boris (baptized as Roman), the son of the Equal to the Apostles St. Prince Vladimir. Boris and Gleb are the first canonized Russian saints. The story of his life and death, post-mortem miracles and canonization are contained in chronicles and some hagiography works written soon after St. Boris’ death based on oral accounts. After their father's death the eldest son Sviatopolk planned to kill his brothers Boris, Gleb, and Yaroslav in order to seize power. He sent a message to Boris, pretending that he wished to live in peace with him, and to increase Boris's land holdings inherited from their father. Some of Vladimir's advisers told Boris that he should take the army and establish himelf as ruler of Kiev. St Boris, however, said that he could never lift his hand against his own brother. Unfortunately, Sviatopolk was not so scrupulous. He came to the town of Vyshegorod to ask its leaders if they were loyal to him. They assured him that they were ready to die for him. Sviatopolk sent assassins to the Alta to kill Boris, who already knew that his brother wanted him dead. When they arrived they heard him chanting psalms and praying before an icon of Christ. He asked the Lord to strengthen him for the suffering he was about to endure. He also prayed for Sviatopolk, asking God not to count this against him as sin. Then he lay down upon his couch, and the assassins stabbed him with their lances, and also killed some of Boris's servants. Wrapping Boris in a cloth, they threw him onto a wagon and drove off with him. When Sviatopolk saw that he was still breathing, he sent some men to finish him off with swords. Saint Boris received the crown of martyrdom in 1015. He and his brother Gleb became known as Passion-Bearers, since they did not resist evil with violence. The tale and passion and praise to saint martyrs Boris and Gleb describes St. Boris as a man with “a nice body, tall, round face, broad shoulders, thin waits, kind eyes, joyful face, small beard and moustaches, for he was young, shone like a king, strong”. According to this description, the saint was depicted with a beard and moustaches, dressed in the Russian national garment – a round fur-linen hat and a cloak, with a cross and a sword in his hands. The feast day of St. Boris is celebrated on May 15 (May 2, in the old style) and August 6th (July 24th , in the old style).

Yamshikov wrote: “Dear Aleksey, I used to send introductory articles to the previous catalogues of the icons painted by you. I am not in the habit of making a formal reply just for my friends’ pleasure; still then, I could see not only broken concepts in your creative work but sincere effort and purity of spiritual thought in icon painting. I did not accept totally everything that you used to do in your early creative period, but your hankering after the work in this gracious field promised fruitful and mature results.
