Icon of Saint Michael Painting

One of a collection of three saints with conections to Cornwall in the U.K. I've fused elements of traditional byzantine iconography with my own artistic style. I started the designs digitally to allow for greater control and editing of the precise line-work. Once finalised these were transferred to board for painting and the application of gold leaf. The boards are backed by another smaller board which, when hung, gives the illusion of them floating 3/4 of an inch away from the wall. The backs are also finished with gold leaf so that any ambient light is reflected back on the wall giving a subtle glow or aura to the pieces. They are obviously modern in composition and method but, at the same time respect their heritage. For example, the boards were first covered with linen which signifies the covering of Christ’s body after crucifixion. Another tradition in iconography is to have part of the halo appear in front of the frame. This is to symbolise the figure stepping from the heavenly into the earthly realm and, with my designs, the same is achieved by having the saints’ stand completely proud of their frames.
