About The Artwork

“Ignite,” is a mixed media oil painting with regal colors and thick textures. Undoubtedly there is nothing quite like copper when the sun hits it, and this captivating effect was the inspiration for the painting’s title. Not only this, but the copper in this painting is a metaphor of the sun’s alchemizing interaction with water, for example the golden light on a lake during a sunset. In addition, there are elements of earth and sky in the piece. The bottom half is a grounded red - earth - and the top portion is a light blue - bringing to mind the sky. Finally, “Ignite” to me represents the power of the human spirit. Whether one’s heart is pulled to stand up against injustice, or perhaps to muster the courage to realize one’s dreams, one thing is sure. When one connects to that reserve of inner power or soul, there is indeed something truly beautiful that ignites.

After earning a Bachelor of Individualized Studies in Art, Holistic Health, and Religious Studies at the University of Minnesota, Cohen studied traditional oil painting. and mixed media techniques at the Milan Art Institute. It was there that her style as an abstract expressionist emerged. Today Cohen’s work explores emotional nuance through the use of vibrant colors and textures. Her work is visceral, fast-paced, and intuitive, leveraging tools such as spray paint, collage, mirror, fabric, acrylic inks, and oil paint. She considers her creative process a storm of inspiration that might strike at any moment - moving quickly before passing upon completion of each piece. “My work is intuitive,” says Cohen “Painting for me is both a release of the old and a process of regeneration where I feel very connected and alive.” Based in the heart of Minneapolis, Cohen’s studio is five minutes from the Mississippi river, where she often sits and writes about themes for her upcoming pieces. The sun moving through the water - an element Cohen has incorporated in much of her work - is one of her top inspirations. Cohen is in the beginning stages of creating an art book of her work.
