About The Artwork

One does not have to look far to find ancient ruins in Rome, they can be seen everywhere. This is my interpretation of what was once the center of the Roman Empire, “Impression of the Roman Forum”. It is a view as seen from the arched corridors of the old Republic State building, now a part of the Capitoline museums. An afternoon summer storm had just passed over the city. Bluish gray clouds were hanging over the horizon. A glimmer of early evening sunlight broke through the haze. Just enough to softly light the middle grounds and a few of the enduring structures. Closest to us on the right are the few remaining columns standing tall in shadow from the Temple of Vespasian & Titus. Behind them further up the hill is the Il Tempeio dei Dioscuri. Near the peak of the hill is the Basilica d Sana Francesca Romana. Just over the crest and almost directly behind the Basilica stands the Coliseum. Below the Basilica towards the center are the bleached columns of San Lorenzo in Miranda. Returning to the bottom on the left stands one of the largest arches in the forum which dates back to about 203 A. D. The triumphal Septimius Severus Arch. Due to the storm few tourists were still around. With this painting I wanted to capture the atmosphere, the quietness and diffused lighting. Also to denote the decay of the historic vestiges where the seat of power of Rome once stood. Painted with a limited pallet, I feel I accomplished my goal.

J. Kenneth Grody is a contemporary realist painter who lives and works in Dayton, Ohio, a city near to where he was born and raised. Oils, pastels, graphite and charcoals are the mediums he chooses to express his creativity. Ken paints primarily in oils in a manner inspired by several of his favorite artists; a few which include Velázquez, Sorolla, Zorn, Sargent and Duveneck in a direct painterly style with brushy strokes. Ken graduated from Wright State University earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a focus in painting and art history. In addition he studied with several of today’s exceptional painters and portrait artists, including Judith Carducci, Daniel E. Green, and Michael Shane Neal. He also feels fortunate to have had the opportunity to study abroad in England, France, and Italy. While there he studied many of the great works by the old masters which he believes has had a profound impact upon his art.
