This piece from my popular French Landscapes series evokes a summer day in the Fontainebleau Forest. I wanted to capture how light and shadow, darkness and sunshine play across the lushness of the forest. A forest holds many secrets--dark and dank one moment, blazing with light pouring into a clearing the next. And an ancient forest is even more intriguing. The Fontainebleau Forest south of Paris has been inhabited for millennia. If only the trees could talk... Ever since my first visit to the Fontainebleau Forest in the mid-1990s, I have been captivated by the beauty of its trees and the mysteries of its rocks. For any artist, the forest is an inspiration, but Fontainebleau is particularly so for me because it is considered one of the birthplaces of modern art. Home to the Barbizon School of painters in the late 19th Century, Fontainebleau nurtured artists such as Millet and Rousseau who had a profound affect on the development of modern art into the 20th Century. Acrylic on canvas, 40" x 55". Unframed with painted edges. Signed and dated on the back and wired for hanging. Shipped in a crate with a Certificate of Authenticity.

I am an abstract/landscape painter living on Bowen Island near Vancouver, BC. I use paint to discover and uncover organic forms, sometimes stylized and dynamic, sometimes loose and subtle. As you'll see in the collections on this website, my work draws upon traditions common to surrealism and abstract expressionism. A lot of my inspiration comes while traveling and absorbing other cultures and landscapes, particularly those of France and Italy. As the son of an architect who instilled in me a love of modernist art and architecture, I'm also inspired by painters such as Picasso, Miro and Max Ernst. My work is included in public and private collections worldwide and I have exhibited throughout Europe and in Canada, the United States, Asia, and South America.
