ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In 'Impulse,' the spirit of Terry Gilliam's artistic vision, particularly his mesmerizing animation in the cinematic gem 'The Holy Grail,' serves as the crucible for inspiration. Here, the artist deftly wields Gilliam's iconic 'sun with legs' motif, endowing it with a metaphorical resonance that extends far beyond the immediate visual. It becomes a symbol, a cipher, for a myriad of narratives interwoven within this intricate tapestry. At its core, this celestial figure alludes to a deity, evoking a broad and metaphorical contemplation of the divine. Yet, within this expansive framework, the artist ingeniously threads an array of narratives, each contributing to the rich tapestry of meaning. We encounter the concept of 'Newspeak,' a linguistic invention of George Orwell in his seminal work '1984,' where language becomes a vehicle for thought control and constraint. Here, 'Impulse' delves into the dialectic of communication, probing the ways in which language can shape and confine our cognitive horizons. Yet, it is the rusty pipe, an enduring motif poised on the left flank of the canvas, that beckons us to grapple with the inexorable passage of time. It stands as a poignant symbol, an evocation of the veins and arteries coursing beneath our skin, vulnerable to the relentless march of decay, akin to the rust that gradually consumes the pipe's surface. In 'Impulse,' we are invited into a realm where the imagery of Gilliam and the literary resonance of Orwell converge, a captivating mélange of symbolism and commentary. It's a visual discourse that prompts us to contemplate the divine, the linguistic, and the temporal within the confines of this evocative canvas.

Tom engages with an eclectic range of images taken from the everyday, books, art history, and television. By funnelling a broad range of source material onto the canvas, the work oozes ambiguity. Although Tom is extremely selective with his choice of word and image, he combines them in such a way to blur any apparent meaning, allowing for a unique and individual voyage into the deep void created by the multitude of layers of paint and newspaper on the canvas. Tom’s work orbits around anti-capitalist themes as his bombastic brush strokes become an expression of detest towards powers of corruption. Tom’s work is a protest against the spiritually depraved world we live in and aims to sustain and invigorate the culture of art he is so infatuated by. Tom is a London-based artist who is a graduate from the University of Brighton and is currently studying a masters at UAL: Camberwell.
