About The Artwork

As a deaf artist, I try to tell my story and perspective through my paintings. This piece is about my experience living between the deaf world and the other world where people can hear. I always feel like I am ‘in-between’ these two worlds. I am still learning and always trying to continue using Auslan - it really has opened up my world and my life in many ways. This painting is about shutting out and taking a break from the hearing world - the person depicted doesn’t have a mouth, which is a way for me to explain how I am feeling about taking that break. Often I find because I speak reasonably well and people can understand what I am saying, there is a misconception that I can hear well also and this is not necessarily true. I prefer to use Auslan and have a much greater understanding when am being communicated to using Auslan. You don’t need to speak to get your point across, Auslan is an amazing way to communicate and an incredibly visual language, hence the focus on the eye in this painting.

Angie Goto is an Australian deaf artist who loves to express herself through vivid paintings of images that live in her mind. Her love of reading and painting have joined to create endless 'stories' on canvas that strive to recreate the scenery she has silently witnessed and participated in her life. Being deaf has allowed her to experience a different take on life that has both ups and downs, but if you ask her, the ups have far outweighed the downs! She embraces the differences she sees in the human spirit and constantly strives to bring awareness to all about our similarities rather than our differences. Working as a full time artist and part time Art Educator at the Museum of Contemporary Arts Sydney enables her to be involved with the community in a meaningful and rewarding manner.
