Incarnation 1 Painting

This piece turned out to be a watershed moment for me personally, as it became the start to my Incarnation series of paintings. In it I explore the dynamic and often violent interactions between the body, emotions, and spirit. Throughout the series the corporeal and ethereal worlds are often indistinguishable, as I use biological imagery to describe spiritual or emotional states. The objects in each painting are largely touchstones that I use in the creative process. Most of my work before I began this series consisted of assemblages and in many ways I am more comfortable working with mixed media than with painting. Responding to an object on the canvas was a way of keeping myself focused and comfortable enough to explore new subjects and media. Aesthetically I believe the objects are justifiable in this series, as they are a way of connecting the two dimensional subjects of the painting to the three dimensional world of the viewer, thus symbolically making them "Incarnate."
