About The Artwork

Inspired by human movement this figure is curved over but at the same time floating in space as if the body has been lifted up from it's centre. I'm interested in unique depictions of the human form; moving but still, in the air but grounded, intelligent and primal. I hear music when I look at this painting and I painted this series whilst listening to contemporary music. I have used acrylic inks as I love the sheen quality they have and the way it kicks back the light to the viewer.

Mark Baldwin is a dancer and multi media artist specialising in Painting and it's relationship to Choreography. He was born in the British Colony of Fiji. As a young child his Fijian mother took him with her to the ballet which she loved. At Art School he fell in love with the American Abstract Expressionists and the work they were doing with the great American choreographer Merce Cunningham and the composer John Cage. The scholarship he won in his first year at art school paid for the extensive training he undertook to become a highly trained dancer. Today Mark Baldwin makes lush often paired down paintings. They take the viewer into a world of a shapes which to him represent the human body, curving or bending into the picture space. The paintings go beyond the body evoking moods, gardens, sunlight and stories. He works between London and Silves in the Algarve Portugal. The paintings exist in time and space changing with the light. They represent a life time of work. The struggle for perfection and musicality, they carry memories and experiences pulled from the black hole of creativity. Presently he is Academic Visitor University of Cambridge in the Department of Psychology working with Professor Nicola Clayton FRS. The give lectures and demonstration on the nature of creativity, perception and Mental Time Travel.
