About The Artwork

I created this abstract painting listening to the cicadas in Sydney. We get them singing a tune every February in Sydney. This cubist painting is a sound painting, a painting about heat and humidity- - both of which are steamy in Sydney in February. When I stretched this canvas to create a large oil painting, I prepared the canvas with different layers of fine oil paint. I have a special painting technique where I layer the paints with some of my favourite brushes. Before it dries I sort of sculpture the paint to create a painting with depth. I star the work with a view of how the colours will lift off the canvas. I then let myself go and the oil painting speaks to me. I am in flow with the sounds of the cicadas, and I imagine them singing cicala-cicada-cidada - its an abstract painting of songs. See if you can find the tune.

Dmitry was born in 1962 in Ukraine and he studied for six years at the Academy of Fine Arts and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in 1986. Because of the many challenges of life under Russian rule, Dmitry left to find a new life in Australia and has been living here for over 30 years. As soon as he arrived in Australia, Dmitry started to embrace the colours and stories of a much more open and free society. What’s more he was and is very productive! Dmitry has an extensive collection of drawings, watercolour paintings, and oil paintings. He is renowned for his use of light and perspective which give all of his works a kind of surreal movement across the canvas or paper. Dmitry is in many ways a modern impressionist. His watercolours and oil paintings examine the objects around us - street scapes, ordinary people, children and pets, city scapes, working people and so on. He forces us to re-examine these objects via vivid representations of how these objects may look with a slightly different perspective. And in most cases when we look at the world through Dmitry's impressionist pallet, we find very positive messages about the world around us, and our place in it.
