About The Artwork

This painting examines the theme of narcissism, and how artists treat their sitters. On my sofa, I have asked a woman to undress and pose for me, but in actuality, I am only really interested in painting myself. My model is treated as an object in a still-life, as no more than a prop. The viewer cannot see her face, or emotion, or any hint of her personality. Only her beautiful nude body is visible. She is treated with simple lines and colours, whereas my face is rendered in more depth. The exaggerated angles of the table remind the viewer that what they are seeing is not reality, and is entirely dictated by myself. Within the painting, my rules are the only ones that apply. Though a woman may be simplified and objectified by an artist, that does not mean this was the true relationship between them. The traditional subject matter and format refers to art history and the tradition of both portraiture and nudes. It aims to critique how women have been used as props throughout art history, and how this may arise from the vanity of the artist.
