I started painting large unstretched canvases in 1966, while a student at Penn State. I used acrylic on unprimed canvas, and the variations in the canvas remain in the finished painting. Painting, design and colour are combined by putting layer upon layer of colour in a drawing manner; the nature and the viscosity of colour are varied by adding more dry pigment (so that it can absorb the layer on top), and at other times by adding more medium. The painting and drawing is combined in a single gesture. Pigments absorb, suspend, and radiate colour, and the surface locates the character and the substance, to make paintings a new kind of object. Light here is not a defining element or a radiating source - it is absorbed and in some canvases enmeshed. Colour stands in a unique position absorbing both light and darkness. In this Intuitive Geometry series, I was dealing with issues of space, gravity, movement. I sometimes staple a painting directly to the wall, or stitch a sleeve and put a rod through to hang it. Either way, the paintings are usually attached only at the top, leaving the canvas free. Some of the paintings are meant to be horizontal or vertical, others could be viewed either way. In the tradition of Abstract painting, they are usually not signed.

Ranjan Sen was born in West Bengal in 1941. He first learned painting as a child from his father, the painter Abani Sen. He was known early on as a child prodigy, and his first one person show was attended by Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and M.F. Hussein. Considered a Master by fellow artists, Sen combines an extraordinary talent with rigorous training and a lifelong dedication to the study of art and nature. His paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures can be found in private collections all over the world. His work can also be seen in public collections such as the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi and the Canada Council Art Bank in Ottawa. He lives in Vancouver, Canada, since 1973. “Attraction to nature is obvious in my recent works. I want my paintings to be subtle, subliminal reminders to the viewer of how fragile and precarious the balance in nature is. These works are a witness and a reminder, so that we don’t spoil it all, but at the same time I want the viewer to enjoy and revel in the magic of movement, colour and aroma and wonder how and where one wants to fit in the scheme of things.”
