About The Artwork
Isbjørn, is Norwegian for polar bear, direct translation-ice bear. The polar bear is represented by thin layers of watery paint, dripping down its fur. This is to reflect the melting ice due to climate change. The stark black background intends to emphasise the subject and also to suggest the uncertain future these animals are facing. Melting sea ice is the biggest threat to polar bear numbers. If there is no drastic improvement in greenhouse gas emissions the polar bear will be extinct by 2100.

I graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2000 and have since been a practising artist living and working in Dublin, Ireland. I am originally from Norway but since moving away to go to college, I have lived in many countries and travelled all over the world. Colour plays a major role in all my work and I create surface richness by using multiple layers and contrasting areas of the picture with thin transparent glazes. The human face and body has always fascinated me with their intensity of colours, structure, light and shadow. I want to re-create the human skin and flesh using the multitude of colours I see when looking at a subject. I want to explore the skin close up and find ways in portraying it through paint.
