I create my paintings back to front. Painting from behind allows my vision to bleed through the linen canvas, layer by layer, to emerge as an approximation of intention. In today's media-driven and partisan world, practical, balanced and moderate ideas are often obscured, ultimately eclipsing modern and historical lessons. This technique is a nod to the imbalance; leaving a visible history of mark making, a record in which what is normally intended to remain secret is instead put on display. My work celebrates the landscape and the intangible state of mind it invariably creates. Natural and built environments, including human-made, protected, architecturally designed or farmed land, are rich sources of inspiration. I examine structure latent in nature and the tension created by angles that occur in the reclining landscape. Repetition of vertical marks, like the syntax of language, become instructive by inferring the progression of dismantled land. Incompleteness, imprecise lines, and cockeyed perspectives also point to the physical vulnerability of land--benevolent or not--on nature. The viewer is encouraged to ruminate on the loss of open land and its implications.
