About The Artwork

This painting is a compilation of images taken from the history of the Isle of Lewis. The three carved figures are from the renowned chess set found on the island. They were carved 800 years ago, in Walrus ivory, and are considered to be the greatest chess pieces of the European middle ages. The standing stones are part of the Neolithic Callanish stones. The ruined structure is the Carloway Broch and dates from the Iron Age. The compass and astrolabe remind us of the great importance that the ocean has had on the island and it's people. Painted on Winsor and Newton canvas board with an acrylic under paint, pencil and a finishing coat in oils.
