About The Artwork

Ivan Kupala day is the day of the summer solstice, after which the day begins to shorten. It is an ancient folk celebration in the Eastern and Western Slavs. Midsummer day is filled with rituals associated with water, fire and herbs. On the night of Ivan Kupala girls wondered with wreaths descended into the river: if the wreath floats, it promised happiness and a long life or marriage. This touching ritual, with wreaths, and captured on film a Midsummer. For the Slavs, the sun had divine power over the living, and the summer solstice meant the highest peak of all the forces of nature. Initially, before the spread of Christianity, the holiday was associated with the summer solstice (20-22 June). Now, Midsummer is celebrated on June 7. The picture Midsummer was presented at the personal exhibition in the International ethno-cultural festival-contest of ETHNIC ART FEST in 2017.

Yulia Belasla was born in 1987 in the city of Barnaul, Altaiskiy Kray, Russia. When she was still a baby her parents moved to the city of Kemerovo, in Siberia, where she had grown up. Since 2017 she has been living in Moscow, Russia. Since her childhood, Yulia was attracted to painting. Private lessons, various courses, and art school only warmed up her interest. Finally, Yulia Belasla has graduated from the Kemerovo State University of Culture and Arts, as a graphic designer. She had studied there both classical painting and drawing, as well as the form’s stylization. 2013-2017 she had a frame shop where she worked as a decorative artist in Kemerovo, offered picture frames and a passionate taught of adults and children to painting. In 2017 she closed her a frame shop. Today, her time is entirely dedicated to producing art and she gives art master classes. Artist’s Statement In my practice, I work with painting, exploring themes: love, human relationships, Slavic traditions and information technology. I work in traditional media, using oil, acrylic, watercolor, and golden potali. The inner volume of the paintings is achieved only on the contrast of cold and warm color palettes. Otherwise, I avoid feeling the depth of space, turning the composition to ornamental correspondence or icon painting practice. The symbolic structure of the structure of objects and characters and the addition of decorative elements to the space: a reference to ancient cultural codes and sign systems. The two main genres of my works are subject painting and portraits. I combine mythology, legends and assemble them into an anthropomorphic image. It is read through signs sewn into the perceptions of each person. In my opinion, emotions are the brightest color of the universe, a universal language understandable to everyone. I've always been interested in how people are emotionally connected to each other. The interaction of these connections forms my approach to developing themes within paintings.
