About The Artwork

This is a series of three wood panel paintings completed in September. Each panel measures 16" (H) x 20" (L) x 1/2" (W). Inspiration for the painted scene in the foreground came from my interest in Japanese anime, specifically the work of Yoshitaka Amano. Inspiration for the background panels came from my fascination with Mokume Gane metal working/ finishing techniques. A noticeable aspect of these paintings is my use of French Curves. The entire scene was drawn using different sizes and arrangements of French Curves. These were used to produce some well-defined, dramatic shapes, adding fluidity, grace, and movement to the overall composition. I tried to create a sense of balance in this painting: A princess in repose, a warrior in battle; flying silvery clouds, landed brightly plumed birds; darkness below, brightness above. The same goes for the background where I balance hoizontal shades of silver, gold, copper and bronze with vertical streaks of magenta and purple.

I developed my artistic interests from an early age, mostly through informal training. Despite my artistic interests, I attended Berkeley to study engineering. On the surface it appears to be in contrast to the creative arts, but I believe the two are linked. Artists create the objects of peoples' desires; engineers create what people need. Both are important to society and to me. I have experimented with many painting techniques. Oil is my preference. Oil paint patiently awaits the patient, guided hand. It dries slow allowing for a great range of blended color, texture, and layering. My favorite subjects include abstracts and landscapes. Above all, I seek original creative expression. My works are created from the vacuity of the mind with nothing save my imagination. I respect the style and techniques of all artists and art movements, but do not seek to duplicate them. By adhering to these principals, my creative faculties remain unfettered.
