About The Artwork

Jathilan art is a type of art that lives and thrives in rural communities. Jathilan art has the nature of being easily recognized and popular among the public, so art in rural areas is more familiarly known as folk art. Folk art is art that lives and grows and develops in rural communities. Jathilan as a horse-drawn dance features a dancer holding a horse-shaped piece of bamboo or leather with movements imitating the movements of a horse or horse rider. Jathilan art is synonymous with horses as an object of presentation. Horses have provided inspiration, from dance movements to the meaning behind folk dances. Epistemologically, the term jathilan comes from the Javanese term njathil which means jumping up and down resembling the movements of a horse. From movements that were initially free and irregular, they were then arranged in such a way that it became a movement that was more interesting to look at, such as a dance depicting a horse prancing around imitating the movement of a horse.

My name is Kusbudiyanto, I was born on the outskirts of the city of Yogyakarta. I was born by a simple mother named Sujilah and my father named Jumadi siswo susanto a lowly civil servant, I am the 6th child of 7 siblings. Warmth and solidarity are felt in our family, and we were taught mutual help and cooperation by my father and mother. Since kindergarten I liked to paint with social themes such as playing in the river, fishing and flying kites etc. After graduating from high school I hoped to be able to study at an art school but, my mother had no funds, so my hopes or aspirations at art school were canceled and finally I worked for a company engaged in the export of crafts and assisting artisans. My job was product development and craft design. Learning from making designs to craft,s helps me in continuing my hobby of painting. I was asked by a company to take part in training on design in the Philippines in 1996 and in the Netherlands in 2000. In that two trainings, my work on craft design became the best design. At the beginning of 2016 I tried to learn to paint on canvas. My first painting was entitled LAST SUPPER, and now this painting is in Switzerland bought by a friend from Switzerland. From that experience I tried to paint with many themes such as the tradition of Satu Suro which tells about tradition. Namely Keris and other themes such as shadow puppet performances and others, and these works were purchased by Mr. Seno Samudro (head of the Boyolali area) in 2017. In 2018 I took part in the exhibition for the first time, in Yogyakarta. There is an exhibition of Nandur Srawung. The participants were painters and sculptors throughout Indonesia. To be able to take part in exhibitions, my works must pass the selection held by the committee and my painting is one of the works that passed the selection and was able to take part in exhibitions. From this experience, I am diligent in painting and to be exhibited, one of which is at Bentara Budaya Yogyakarta in 2019, Singapore in 2020 and other exhibitions until now.
