About The Artwork

'Judgement' is an original painting in egg tempera and gold leaf on wood, made using authentic medieval techniques. It has a fixed, wooden frame. The inspiration for this painting came from medieval depictions of the Last Judgement and Hell. Here, Hell is imagined as something like a huge termite mound, crawling with creatures both strange and familiar, disgusting and fascinating. The mound is almost a living thing itself, the colour of the inside of a body and covered with fleshy orifices, which both suck in and eject. Trapped in the uppermost orifice is a human figure, who is disappearing into the mound while turning his face upwards in the hope of mercy. Sharp and pitiless rays of light seem to condemn the figure to his fate. The image examines feelings of fear and guilt and our despair at being trapped inside ourselves with our own failings. Although the subject matter is dark, the image is brightly coloured and playful and is treated with humour. In addition to medieval influences, the painting also draws inspiration from contemporary Mozambican art by Malangatana and Idasse, who use brightly coloured creatures on black grounds to convey the horrors of war. Medieval European techniques were used to make the painting, with a wooden panel prepared with gesso. This was covered in red bole and water gilded where required. The paint was then made from dry pigments hand ground in egg yolk tempera. The painting is signed and dated on the reverse and has a picture cord attached so that it is ready to hang.

I am a British artist based in the western suburbs of Paris. Firmly rooted in medieval methods, I use aesthetic devices originally meant to glorify the church to make secular paintings conveying the wonder and power of the natural world and the ambiguity of man’s relationship with it. I fell in love with early Italian painting while living in Florence, and returned to the UK to study it in a masters degree at Oxford University. I then went on to train as a paintings conservator at the Hamilton Kerr Institute, Cambridge, where I became passionate about the materials and techniques of medieval European art and learned to gild and paint in hand-made egg tempera on wooden panels prepared with gesso. After many years researching these methods in theory and practice, culminating in the publication of my annotated translation of Cennino Cennini’s fifteenth century treatise on art, I began to develop my own artistic practice. My paintings, which have been sold to collectors world-wide, have been selected for numerous local salons and I was shortlisted for the New Emergence Art Prize in 2022.
