Painting, Acrylic on Paper
Size: 5.3 W x 9.1 H x 0.1 D in
Surrealist leaf composition inspired by a Byzantine leaf motif that can be seen inside Constantine Lips Monastery Church in Aksaray, Istanbul. Paper cut out of the leaf motif was used as a ruler on paper and painted by uncontrolled brush strokes. This leaf is next to the wreath and peacock figures on the marble cornice of the main apse of the north church. Melishan Devrim saw this leaf pattern in a little, black-and-white photograph from Dumbarton Oaks Archive (Rodley, 1999). When she visited Fenari İsa Camii in Aksaray in July 2022, she noticed that the relief of the cross encircled by a wreath of foliage between two birds had been replaced with a simple, circular marble plaque. But this leaf motif remains on the apse cornice. She researched and determined that the wreath with cross figure has been removed during the most recent renovation, which was carried out between 2013 and 2018. The recently released book about this restoration does not include a photo of this cornice after restoration. In this painting, she makes a reference to the intentional destruction of Byzantine heritage in Istanbul by covering the leaf motif with red paint.
