Painting, Acrylic on Paper
Size: 17.7 W x 13.3 H x 0.1 D in
Geometric abstraction of a Byzantine leaf motif with surrealist improvisation technique. Paper cut-out of the leaf motif was used as a ruler on paper and painted by uncontrolled brush strokes. Then blue glitter paint was applied to the areas where the motif is distinguishable. This leaf motif can be seen inside Constantine Lips Monastery Church in Aksaray, Istanbul. It is on the marble cornice of the main apse of the north church, above 5 meters from the ground. It’s been assumed that the sculptural elements of the north church belong to an ancient structure which means recycled materials were used for decorating the north church, including recurved antique slabs for the cornices and the capitals of the pilasters. These recycled materials were initially found at Cyzicus (also known as Kyzikos in Mysia, Balıkesir). In this case Byzantine sculptors may have appropriated ancient motifs and used it in the decoration of a church in the 10th century. And this geometric abstract painting produced after 11 centuries from this event, further appropriates this ancient design and transforms it to a contemporary art form. This geometric abstract composition cannot be reproduced by the artist in exact form due to the nature of the improvisation technique.
