About The Artwork

Geometric composition with a leaf design inspired by Byzantine art. This leaf motif is a relief inside the Constantine Lips Monastery’s north church, located in Aksaray, Istanbul. In this painting she tries to transform the Byzantine leaf motif to a Rumi motif. In Islamic art, vertical half of a palmette design is called Rumi, and a palmette is defined as two Rumi designs placed opposite each other to create a medallion. In this painting, Byzantine leaf design was split in two vertical parts to create Rumi designs from it and same Rumi patterns placed around Byzantine leaf. The leaf and Rumi patterns are cut-out from paper and applied to the painted surface. Diagonal brushstrokes and the angles of the patterns aim to create an impression of circular movement. However, this ancient leaf motif resembles to a lotus flower and it belongs to a larger composition on the marble cornice of north church’s main apse. The main part of the cornice comprises a central composition, with an equal-armed cross enclosed in a wreath of foliage and, flanking the wreath, two symmetrical flower stems and two facing partridges [or peacocks]. Beyond this composition which is in the middle of the frieze, the field is divided into equilateral triangles by a slight zig-zag frame, each triangle being filled with an upright leaf or a palmette (Grabar, 1963). But this cross relief enclosed by a wreath of foliage, representing the place of Jesus is in heaven, is missing today, possibly recently stolen.
