About The Artwork

Geometric composition inspired by a Byzantine leaf motif found inside the north church of Constantine Lips Monastery, built in the tenth century in Aksaray, Istanbul. Cut-out paper versions of the leaf drawing had been applied to the paper. This leaf motif can be seen on the marble cornice of the main apse of the north church, above 5 meters from the ground, and it belongs to a larger composition. The composition of this apse cornice in the old photographs from Dumbarton Oaks Archive, contains a wreath and a cross in the middle, and two peacock figures stand alongside of this wreath. In addition to this apse cornice composition, this leaf motif occurs in different areas inside the church. However, the wreath and the cross relief in the middle of the northern apse cornice is missing today, possibly recently stolen because it can be seen that it was carefully being removed and replaced with a circular plain marble during the recent restoration held between 2013-2018.
