About The Artwork

Leaf composition inspired by a Byzantine leaf motif that can be seen inside Constantine Lips Monastery Church in Aksaray, Istanbul. This composition researches to create depth to the motif by adding parts of the motif to the corners of the surface, and transforms the upright design of the leaf into a circular form. For the corners, paper cut out of the leaf motif has been applied to another paper which painted in black or grey to create contrast to the motif’s colour. Another paper motif was prepared with reverse colors of the first one to create further contrast and applied together in an angle onto the surface. These contrasts refer to the positive and negative spaces in photography where the negative space surrounding the object is actually defines its form. The motif itself painted in silver grey to remind that this is actually a sculptural element of a Byzantine structure. Even though this ancient leaf motif resembles to a lotus flower, it actually belongs to a larger composition on the marble cornice of north church’s main apse. The main part of the cornice comprises a central composition, with an equal-armed cross enclosed in a wreath of foliage and, flanking the wreath, two symmetrical flower stems and two facing partridges [or peacocks]. Beyond this composition which is in the middle of the frieze, the field is divided into equilateral triangles by a slight zig-zag frame, each triangle being filled with an upright leaf or a palmette (Grabar, 1963). But this cross relief enclosed by a wreath of foliage, representing the place of Jesus is in heaven, is missing today, possibly recently stolen.
