During the 1940s and 1950s, when ethnobotanist Richard Evans Schultes was researching the indigenous use plant medicines in the Colombian Amazon, he observed that the Kamsá payé (shaman) Salvador Chindoy was one of the most knowledgeable plant medicine people in the region. Based on photographs taken by Schultes, this portrait of Salvador (now deceased) depicts him standing in front of a culebra borachera tree (Brugmansia aurea), a powerful solanaceous transogen used traditionally by Kamsá shamans for divination, prophecy, and healing.
