About The Artwork

An original mineral painting, made with 24k gold, crushed minerals (natural and synthetic), and oyster shells on Japanese paper mounted on a wood panel. Natural colors include gemstones or precious and semi-precious stones such as gold and quartz (clear-white). Because these substances consist of unique chemical and physical properties, every artwork has unique characteristics with a sense of connection to the earth. It has a matt and rich sand-like texture. Depicted is a "Higashi Chaya" district in Kanazawa Japan, on a snowy day in February 2020. In Japanese culture, geisha houses (referred to as “chaya”) have been traditional places for entertainment since the period of Edo. Geishas are female Japanese entertainers who perform dances and play traditional Japanese instruments. The district’s historical wooden buildings retain the atmosphere of its 200-year history. The artist presents the sceneries seen through her eyes in an art form, precisely depicting the magical atmosphere of the snowy Kanazawa. In mint condition, Certificate of Authenticity included and calligraphy seal in front, hand-signed at the back. Sold unframed and ready to hang (eye bolt and string mounted at the back). Artist: Maria Mitsumori Style: Japanese mineral painting Size: H53 x W80 x D2 cm (20.87 x 31.5 x 0.79 in) Year: 2020

Mitsumori works in the traditional Japanese art form of mineral painting. She lived and studied at international boarding schools in Switzerland and Hong Kong for 15 years before returning to Japan. Her global upbringing and Japanese roots heavily influence how she sees the world and inform the thematic tendencies in her work, most notably in the ideas of transcending borders and coexisting diversity. Mitsumori considers painting as a tangible way to preserve the abstract, drawing upon the early use of mineral painting as a form of preservation. Creating and showcasing artworks nationally and internationally, Mitsumori has exhibited in London, Dubai, Paris, Singapore, and Tokyo. Her multiple award-winning work has been featured in international exhibitions and is part of public collections.
