Joan Mitchell, an abstract expressionist from the 1950's was my inspiration for this piece. She was spontaneous and that's exactly what I wanted to do. Go crazy with the green, calm the parts I wanted and throw in the red accent. It almost painted itself! energetic, lots of movement here. Then one of my cheeky painter friends gave me the title. We got a good laugh and then I thought Why Not? Scrumptious, yes?

My journey into abstract painting has come by way of a 20 yr. career as a Fashion Illustrator and another 15 years depicting cafés and streetscenes of France. Gradually I've pushed the boundaries between representation and abstraction, forging into lost edges and less articulation of subject matter. This last year I've fallen in love with the total freedom that abstraction allows me. Being spontaneous, playing on larger surfaces with loose brushwork-- this is totally seductive. Like the mid-century expressionists, my inspiration comes from the very act of painting, and my own spin is the New Journey.
