One of the pieces of the solo show ' Victoria' We think of the Victorians as a historically distant and alien culture, set, like some gorgeous, polished jewel in the sunset of the past. But, in fact, if we are honest with ourselves, we have never shaken off that society's essential dishonesty and unwillingness to display our real selves in public, in spite of what we may claim. We congratulate ourselves on 100 years of self-awareness through psychotherapy. We brag about how 'open' and forward thinking we are by so happily embracing a tidal wave of cultural shocks - from DaDa to punk, from cubism to banal conceptual art. We flaunt our current, embarrassing compulsion to share the intimate details of our lives on Facebook and we feign cool indifference with our casual, 'adult' tolerance of freely available pornography. But is this 'modern' or 'evolved' image that we show to the world really any more honest than the repressed, murky, hypocritical world of the Victorian age? Aren't we all still the same liars that we always were? Though time has moved on, we are still obsessed with taking the best, most flattering, most photoshopped pictures of ourselves and sharing them with the world - as if the world really cared. And we remain just as unwilling as those stuck up Victorians to show the darkest sides of our secret selves. We are just as unwilling to realise that there is perfection and beauty on the other side of the mirror. Be it a burkha or a nicely, cropped tinted photo zooming it's way to Instagram, we are all still, wearing a veil – we're just kidding ourselves that we're not. ‘Victoria’ by Lg White
