About The Artwork

Painting using acrylic paint on acid-free tissue paper. Tissue adhered to canvas panel with a layer of Golden soft gel medium. Knockan Crag is a national nature reserve north of Ullapool in Sutherland, Scotland. The rough language of the terrain is complemented by the loose brush style. The tissue imparts a soft atmospheric texture without the imposed vigour of brushstrokes. The picture has been created on a canvas panel treated to archival standards to preserve the work. The tissue paper has been coated on both sides with Golden soft gel medium and the picture given a final layer of protection with Golden UV matte varnish. The picture wraps over the sides of the panel. The picture is the standard size 10 x 8". Signed on the reverse with description and title.

You’ll usually see me thinking about composition, playing with pattern and testing spatial relationships, that sort of thing. As for anything else I think about how it affects all the above. I enjoy looking for unlikely structures and trying out fleeting interractions. The question of balance is never far away. When it comes to meaning, the torn and faded materials in my collages show where man has been. I suppose everything reflects an unidealised view of humanity. But I’m also attracted to the opposite, the wide expanses of nature (especially the sea) where there’s not much humanity at all. My influences may not be apparent… I keep coming back to Cézanne and Matisse.
