About The Artwork

The statue of Minerva on the dome of the Mitchell Library in Glasgow, Scotland has come to life. She has been exposed to knowledge of the profane and is floating down from her previous lofty position on the pedestal. Below her can be seen the scholars and students of the library being consumed by chaos and unrule in the form of fire, giant serpents, and the Whore of Babylon and the Beast from the Sea. In the background the roofs and steeples of the city recede into the night. This painting is inspired by the first book of Paradise Lost, the Book of Revelations, and the eternal conflict of knowledge and innocence. The viewer is hopefully directed to the question of whether ignorance can ever be preferable to knowledge.
